Is The Internet Running Out of IP’s?

The news that the internet is running out of IPV4’s has been around for a little while now however as we are approaching the date quicker than expected, many experts are having doubts about the transition into IPV6 and whether it will be without any issues.

The last 5 blocks of IP’s (each with a total of 16.8 million addresses) have already been assigned to regional registries around the world. The system that was established in 1980 and is still in use today (Internet Protocol Version 4) also known as IPV4 will be depleted in the near future. Service Providers will begin giving out IPV6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) numbers when the day comes however it has been reported that only 2% of websites support it at this time. Many service providers around the globe are in a race against time to prepare for the transition and also working on technology to create more IP’s (if possible).

The depletion of the IPV4 addresses is largely due to the amount of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services used worldwide and the growing amount of internet use in Asia. At the beginning of the internet, the 4.3 billion address capacity seemed like more than enough, however with the development of technology and growing internet use, it is no longer far in the horizon.

Here is how the whole system works: IP Addresses are allocated by IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) who is run by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). IANA is in charge of distributing IP’s to the RIR (Regional Internet Registry) – This is an organization that manages the allocation and registration of IP Addresses within a particular segment of the world. Then, RIR allocates the IP’s to ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) who then allocate them to their customers. It is a long process but in the end, it worked well for the time being.

Some experts say that we will have a mess of internet address markets unless your IT department or service provider has taken appropriate action to transition to the IPV6 system.
