July 2016 QuadraNet Newsletter
Welcome to the July edition of the QuadraNet Newsletter!
In this month’s edition, you’ll read about QuadraNet’s experience at NANOG 67, which took place just minutes away from our datacenter in downtown Chicago, IL.
Also in this month’s newsletter, you’ll have access to a client case study that highlights a successful implementation of QuadraNet’s Vest DDoS Mitigation solution. The case study provides an inside look at how one client took the necessary steps to combat an increasingly common issue, DDoS attacks.
And to wrap up July, QuadraNet wants to meet you! If you’ll be attending HostingCon2016 in New Orleans on July 24 – 27, click on the link below and request an appointment to meet with a QuadraNet representative at the event.
QuadraNet Travels to the Windy City for NANOG 67
QuadraNet and NANOG traveled to the windy city, for NANOG 67. NANOG meets three times a year and this June it took place at the Fairmont Millennium Park luxury hotel in downtown Chicago, IL. The event took place just minutes away from QuadraNet’s Chicago datacenter.
Nick Carlson, Chief Technology Officer for QuadraNet, attended the three-day event on behalf of the company. When asked about the many informative sessions throughout the three days, Nick responded with “I found the session titled ‘Elliptic Curves To the Rescue’, which talked about Elliptical curve cryptography for DNSSEC, most interesting.” Roland van Rijswijk-Deij from SURFnet was the presenter for this session.
Events like NANOG always offers great face-to-face networking opportunities, and Chicago did not disappoint. “Beer ’n Gear” which took place on the 2nd evening of the conference was excellent for not only meeting new contacts but also a great chance to get together with old friends. At Chicago’s “Beer ’n Gear”, QuadraNet had the opportunity to catch up with Radware, their DDoS partner as well as meet many other attendees.
This October, NANOG 68 will take place near another QuadraNet datacenter in Dallas, TX. If you are interested in attending, mark your calendars for October 17, 2016, through October 19, 2016. QuadraNet hopes to see you there.
Case Study: HostMantis Utilizes QuadraNet DDoS Solution
HostMantis is a leading shared, VPS and reseller hosting company based out of Livonia, Michigan that offers reliable and low-cost services to their clients. Originally launched as Plexihost, the company rebranded and changed their name to HostMantis in September 2010 as part of a plan to position themselves as a major presence in the web hosting industry.
Company owner, Scott Newton adds, “We offer our clients a reliable service at an unbeatable price.”
HostMantis found itself victim to a DDoS network attack earlier this year and reacted quickly to ensure that their clients were unaffected.
“We began receiving DDoS attacks on all servers in all of the datacenters we use.”, tells Newton.
One of the affected datacenters was HostMantis’s Detroit location which has been operational since 2013. “The Detroit datacenter did not offer DDoS mitigation and had no plans of implementing one within a timely manner. Once the attack was neutralized, we made an immediate decision to move those clients, and the servers they were on to a DDoS protected network.”
HostMantis was also hosting in QuadraNet’s Los Angeles datacenter and was utilizing the Vest DDoS Mitigation service to guard their equipment in LA. Given that Detroit had no DDoS plan in place, HostMantis made a split second business decision to move company’s equipment from Detroit to QuadraNet.
Since HostMantis already used QuadraNet for colocation and was already satisfied with the level of service they were receiving, they felt that the move to QuadraNet was the obvious choice.
“Our servers were racked and configured quickly and as a result, we were able to move the affected clients quickly as well.”
By adapting to the situation promptly, HostMantis was able to ensure that their customers had minimal impact on their services and are now prepared in the event of future DDoS attacks. “Having the security of DDoS protection is definitely a plus, and is something every host needs.”
When asked for thoughts on the entire experience, Scott replied: “The non-stop DDoS attacks we were receiving were difficult to deal with, but QuadraNet was continuously helpful in assisting us block the attacks and keep our servers online and our clients unaffected.”
In addition, to the Vest DDoS Mitigation, HostMantis is also finding that consolidating their equipment from two different locations into one QuadraNet datacenter was a move that made server management easier as well.
